On the Rarest of Occasions

by John May 01, 2009 21:16

Every now and then, the weather and swell conditions come together just right for a wave to do it's thing. There are spots which require the most fickle or specific swell direction. If your lucky/determined enough to figure out that part, congratulations, there is only 15 other variables left that need to be just right for it to work. The biggest variable here being presence of swell.

Then just when you think you have everything all dialed down for a certain surf spot, that perfect day for it comes along when all your 15 variables come together just right, and you take the gamble on it and wake up 3 hours before sunrise just to make sure your on it.

There have been days where I felt like I could of bet money on certain waves working, only to get there and be greeted by a complete lack of waves altogether, sometimes seeming to defy logic.

Then there are those days that you get there and what you see immediately leaves you speechless. Waves that are so good, you immediately forget it is -7 degrees out. For numerous hours.

January 2009- Lineups from Maine to mind-surf.

by John April 30, 2009 17:47

January 2009- The only thing I really recall about these days and the surf, is the time I spent defrosting myself after shooting for 2+ hours in wind chills that made it a struggle for my hands to feel my camera. The light was fun to work with and despite my feelings now, I love the winter and can't wait to see what the winter of 2009-2010 will bring.

Maine Surf Photos - A Few from March 2009

by John April 29, 2009 12:30

March was neither good nor bad for surf here in Maine. It consisted of a lot of real small swell windows, only offering maybe 3-6 hours of rideable waves for each storm/swell event before the offshores sent the waves out to Europe. Jose Perez was down to travel and find some sick waves with me, and I think we succeeded.
